These 10 ancient gizmos lend some creedence to that logic. Take, for example, a car that's been running for over a century: A steam-powered car, billed as "The Oldest Car In The World That Still Runs," was sold in October 2011 at a Hershey, Pa. auction, for $4.6 million. The car had been built in France in 1884, about a year before Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz of Germany—who went on to found the car-makers that would become Daimler (DDAIF), maker of Mercedes-Benz luxury cars—built their first experimental gasoline-powered cars. The four-wheeled De Dion-Bouton et Trepardoux, nicknamed "La Marquise," was originally built for the French Count De Dion, one of the founders of the company that built it. Fueled by coal, wood and bits of paper, the car takes about a half hour to work up enough steam to drive. Top speed is 38 miles per hour. The car came close to that speed during what has been billed as "The World's First Automobile Race" in 1887, according to RM Auctions. The car had last been sold in 2007 for about $3.5 million at a Pebble Beach, Calif. auction It may not be the fastest car on the road, but I bet it's lasted longer than your Ford or Honda ever could! Or what about a 75-year-old TV? For £5,000 you might have expected a bigger, flatter screen. But this television does come with 75 years of broadcasting history – and you can still hook it up to a Freeview box. Built in 1936, the Marconi type-702 is the oldest working television set in Britain. It was bought for just under £100 only three weeks after transmissions in Britain began. And with just one channel broadcasting for two hours a day, there wasn't much need for a remote control. But what the television lacks in modern technology, it makes up for in reliability. Only 30 per cent of its components have been replaced during its lifetime, all with identical parts. The 75-year-old set has a 12-in. screen contained in a walnut and mahogany case, with the picture reflected on to a mirror for the viewer to look at. The TV has now a pre-sale estimate of £5,000, but experts at Bonhams expect it to fetch much more. It cost Mr. Davis £99 and 15 shillings – more than half the annual average wage at the time and equivalent to almost £4,000 today. Its serial number is H1007, and it is thought the sequence began at 1,000, making it number 7. Full story at Oddee. More for history buffs. Unfrotunately, many blogs miss the boat with unsatisfying questions and, as a result, feature unhelpful answers. Reputation Capital offers five keys to crafting a succesful question and answer session. Here are two examples: - Be flexible about the logistics. Some people love to talk on the phone, and that’s how you’ll get the best answers from them. For others, e-mail fits their schedule and communication needs better. Adapt your format to your subject’s comfort level. If you’re conducting the interview orally, ask for permission to record it so you have a backup for your notes. (And I do mean BACKUP; there is no substitute for written note-taking.)
- Tailor the questions. While it’s fine to have a few stock questions you always ask, your Q-and-A will be much richer if you develop three to five questions specific to your subject and audience. At least skim your subject’s book, if she has written one. Visit his website or blog. What is she most passionate about?

| | | Posted about 20 hours ago by Guy Kawasaki to Holy Kaw! | | If you missed the social-media seminar that Mari Smith and I did yesterday, here is the archive. Most often we receive a couple of prizes and finalist diplomas. However, last year we did not receive any award and were angry. Angry and frustrated as we knew that we definitely can do better. At that moment, I wouldn’t have guessed that this cold shower was probably the best what could happen to us. We decided to become even more demanding to ourselves, our principles, believes and the work processes. We tried even harder to create and implement ideas which people would be willing to share, participate and play with. Or as we like call it at DDB - Social Creativity. As a result, this year DDB Latvia won the Grand Prix and became the most awarded agency of ADwards. The awarded projects: - Ventspils Venti. Grand Prix award, gold for integrated campaign, the winner of national voting.
- Okarte Masks. Gold for integrated campaign, silver for digital campaign and graphic identity.
- Nordea Darigudri.lv. Silver for digital campaign and a special prize from Uzvelckreklu.lv.
- Ziedot.lv kiosk. Finalist diploma for print.
And the winning team: I also want to compliment the organisers team of ADwards, because this year the creative concept of the festival and the awards ceremony have raised the quality bar higher than ever. Even the representatives of the international jury admitted that they can't remember such a powerful and well organised advertising festival. But. Who would have thought that a failure may be an excellent opportunity to become the best? Shortly saying - "No fail. No win." | | | Posted about 16 hours ago by Kate Rinsema to Holy Kaw! | 4 | | Although you likely have a few sticky notes hanging around reminding you to do laundry, pick up the kids or not to miss that meeting at 3:00, there are some reminders we could really use that don’t get written down. The discarded material comes from a previous collaboration with movie distributors Desimone had going, and the wood comes from Laboratori’s workshop. Even though they tried to use recovered wood, the film needed to be in perfect tension to support the weight so they needed a type that wouldn’t bend or modify with time and which could provide a perfect fit. It sounds like this is the first of a number of projects they hope to do using old film, so stay tuned to VU35 to see what other interesting pieces they think of. Full story at VU35 via Treehugger. | | | | |
