When the doors and windows close tight against the cold winds of winter, those with pollen allergies may finally breathe a deep sigh of relief, but for sufferers of the indoor variety, their pain is just beginning.

If someone in your household is allegic to dust mites, mold or pet dander, Dr. William Reisacher, director of The Allergy Center in the Department of Otolaryngology at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Dr. Rachel Miller, director of allergy and immunology at NewYork-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital have some simple advice to make this season more merry all around.

• Turn on the exhaust fan when showering or cooking to remove excess humidity and odors.

• Clean your carpets with a HEPA vacuum to decrease dust mites and pet allergen levels.

• Wash your hands after playing with the family pet and avoid touching your face to decrease exposure to common winter viruses.

Every city dweller is familiar with the ingenuity of our fine, feathered friends, as they seek out every nook, cranny and windowsill to make themselves at home. Facebook group Happy City Birds seeks to unite bird lovers and up-cyclers from around the globe in an effort to steer the birds in less annoying directions and brighten up the cityscape at the same time.

Here are just a few of the creations popping up in cities everywhere, thanks to the enthusiasm and efforts of Thomas Winther who kicked off the movement by recycling trash into an incredible 250 birdhouses he placed all over Denmark.

All right, so we’re not sure “sassy” is really the word to use when it comes to unveiling your inner geek on Halloween, but throw in a little confidence and swagger or swing while you sport one of these costumes suggested by Mollie Bloudoff-Indelicato at Scientific American and perhaps you’ll be a first.

PUMPKIN "PI": (above)

It isn't March, but that doesn't mean you can't celebrate the wonders of pi. For an autumnal twist, wear an orange T-shirt emblazoned with the pi symbol. Top it off with a "pi crust" headband. If you can rattle off the first 300 digits of this mathematical mainstay, all the better.

SCHRÖDINGER'S CAT:

Dress to (conceivably) kill this Halloween. Recreate Erwin Schrödinger's infamous thought experiment with a simple box, some face paint and cardboard cutout cat ears. Carry a bottle of "poison" marked "XXX" to tie the look together. With this costume, you'll simultaneously be the life and death of the party.

Crazy for math and science.
