7 ways to perk yourself up at work

When working in an office, it’s easy to let those eight or more hours pass without taking many breaks from the chair, and as recent evidence has shown, it doesn’t just make you feel like grabbing a few zzzz’s around two o’clock but can do some serious damage to your health.

If four or five visits to the coffee pot just aren’t doing it for you, Ashlee McCullen at Be has seven tips to get your bod back on track and boost your productivity as well.

1. Give Yourself a Break

The smokers got it right. Those periodic, 5-to-10 minute breaks outside can be rejuvenating. You’ll feel better going back to work if you give yourself moments of personal time throughout the work day. (Just don’t smoke, OK?)

And if you’re a bit more ambitious, you can implement a full-fledged Pomodoro routine in which you alternate between 25-minute work stretches and 5-minute breaks.

2. Pick up a Meditation Routine

If it doesn’t make you feel too self-conscious, learn how to perform a 5-minute meditation routine. I’ve used the meditation app Take a Break from Stress to meditate right from my desk.

3. Stretch

Studies have shown that stretching can circulate blood flow and help you be more alert and aware. As often as once an hour, try a few stretching exercises.

Are we brainstorming the wrong way?

In open-plan advertising offices, conference rooms, and design firms everywhere, employees are being encouraged to gather together and reach inside their noggins to pull out the most original and creative ideas for good brainstorming sessions. Turns out, decades of psychology research have shown that traditional brainstorming may not be the best way to innovate. On the contrary, collaborating in such ways yields less quality ideas than working in solitude and later meeting to share.

“Your brain is being disassembled and reassembled every day,” says Don Arnold, associate professor of molecular and computational biology at University of Southern California (USC).

"This video shows the process. We’ve known that it was happening, but now we can watch it happen."
