The initial public offering for Facebook brought the topic of business valuation to the forefront. Facebook’s stock price immediately dropped when analysts lowered projections of growth and revenue forecasts, calling into question the value of the company. And the stock price continues to slide.

Value creation is the raison d’être of any business entity. How do you accurately assess the value of a company? What dimensions are the most important for determining company value? How do you calculate a company’s long-term prospects for success?

Warning: Those with a serious foot aversion should not look at this comic.

With the carefree season of barefoot living coming to a close, it might be time to take a closer look at what’s been lurking where the sun don’t shine.

No need to tap the farthest recesses of your imagination to picture what it would be like to descend to the surface of Mars anymore, thanks to this incredible video taken by the MARDI Descent Imager.

As Caleb A. Scharf at Scientific American explained:

Visual effects dab-hand, Daniel Luke Fitch, has used the more recently available HD frames of the descent to make this jaw-dropping movie. As he explains, it runs at 15 frames a second, which represents a speed-up of real events by 3 times. So the actual descent was not quite as ferocious, but it was pretty darn close.

Adding the little green men into the picture is still up to you, though.

Despite differences in rituals and beliefs among the world’s major religions, a new study shows that spirituality often enhances health regardless of a person’s faith.

“In many ways, the results of our study support the idea that spirituality functions as a personality trait,” says Dan Cohen, assistant teaching professor of religious studies at the University of Missouri and one of the co-authors of the study.

“With increased spirituality people reduce their sense of self and feel a greater sense of oneness and connectedness with the rest of the universe."

Flaws may drive superconductor's power

Physicists studying superconductivity strive to create a clean, pure, perfect sample, but a new study shows that some flaws might hold the key to a material’s unique abilities.

“We want to move beyond trying to get rid of disorder, striving for unattainable purity in the materials we examine, and instead take the disorder into account and use it to our advantage,” says Erica Carlson, associate professor of physics at Purdue University.

“These little patches of imperfection where things aren’t lined up in a perfect crystal lattice are important, and old methods that overlooked them fail to capture important physics. The flaws in the lines are like a fingerprint. They reveal the identity deeper inside.”

Teaching family values in a Chinese public square

Every culture has their own way of passing values down from one generation to another, but let’s just say this one seems to get lost in translation.

Some locals have taken to nicknaming the sculpture "hooligan pigs" while others have wondered aloud if such a "vulgar" statue should be placed so prominently on a public square. ... [But the] urban management authority, when contacted by journalists, said the sculpture is part of a series of 21 cartoon stone sculptures designed to inculcate values -- such as perseverance, diligence and love -- in young children. This sculpture, the spokesman reveals, depicts a young pig giving his mother a back massage, and was meant to show the importance of filial piety.

Of course, it’s a backrub!

Somehow we’re thinking there are more than a few sick-minded “children” out there who are not learning the lessons of perseverance, diligence and love so much as not to snicker too loudly at the art (an important lesson in its own right).

Stop the snickering, it’s art.
