Can you imagine a world without Google, Facebook, and LolCats? That's probably not a world you want to live in, but controversial legislation threatens the internet as we know it today.

Marathon pit stop shows the cultural power of sports

Number two doesn’t get many accolades in the world of sports, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and that means the race to be the best involves getting rid of (or leaving a few of your own) speed bumps in the road.

One example of the power of sports in our society comes from Paula Radcliffe, winner of the 2005 London Marathon, who found herself losing time thanks to a need to defecate.

Radcliffe's solution? She simply placed one hand on a metal crowd barricade for balance, used the other to curtain her shorts to the side and perched, precariously, over her shoes. Then, as they say in England, she proceeded to "have a poo" right there on the street and in broad daylight, within two feet of a startled spectator. "I didn't really want to resort to that in front of hundreds of thousands of people," she says, unfazed. "But when I'm racing, I'm totally focused on winning the race and running as fast as possible. I thought, I just need to go and I'll be fine."

Fine she was, winning the marathon in world record time and avoiding chastisement for an action that would usually have earned her a hefty fine, the loss of her Nike sponsorship and/or plenty of grief in the press.

Just as we all seem to acknowledge the need to do what it takes to win, sports appears to be the one place outside the nursery where we’re also willing to acknowledge that everyone poops.

How to make bicycle turn signals

With more people taking to their bikes in cities around the country, safety is a serious concern, especially in places without many designated bicycle lanes. Instructables user CTY1995 has a funky solution that will prove illuminating to drivers with something as simple as the lift of an arm.

Lifehacker notes, "The beauty of these turn signals is that they use a mercury tilt switch and some electroluminescent (EL) panels that light up to show big bright arrows every time he lifts up the arm that corresponds with the direction he wants to move. Combined with some Velcro and armbands, the panels make a comfortable, wearable gadget that can make your bike ride much safer. Best of all, the tilt switch is sensitive enough that you don't have to start waving your arm wildly in the air to turn it on—just a slight lift will do the trick, and everyone around you will know where you're going"

Sounds like a weekend project that could up the chances you’ll have plenty more to enjoy cruising the city streets.

Choosing an influential person to “seed” a video is essential to “buzz” marketing on YouTube, a new study finds.

“The identification of effective seeds (or primary authors) is not only key to the success of these campaigns, but also an important factor in estimating the return on investment from a manager’s perspective,” says study author Hema Yoganarasimhan, a professor at the University of California, Davis.

Fight the chill with an armored hoodie

Dragons in the backyard got you down? Is there a fair maiden to be rescued in summer school? In this day and age, it isn’t advisable to carry a sword to defend oneself or others from the hazards of everyday life, but perhaps this knight hoodie from Etsy shop SOFworks will make you feel more powerful in the face of overwhelming odds.

We don’t recommend walking into any convenience stores dressed like this, though. And that maiden? Be sure she wants saving before making your move because what it doesn't protect you from is pepper spray.

‘Modern’ fathers have been around for far longer than we think, but they have only recently started to change diapers, according to a new study.

"There is a great deal of historical evidence showing that fathers have played a caring and nurturing role with their children for centuries, including taking informal paternity leave to support their partners around the time of childbirth," says University of Warwick historian Laura King.

"However, it does seem to have taken a while for the majority of fathers to take their turn in changing dirty nappies."

Cougars make a comeback in the Midwest

No, cautious mothers of Midwestern farm boys, it won’t be necessary to hide your sons from an onslaught of older women but it might still be advisable to keep an eye out for other predators slinking around where you didn’t expect them.

Thanks to their status as “undesirable predators,” cougars disappeared from the Midwest and East thanks to state-sponsored bounties that began being rescinded in the 1960s and 70s when the animals only survived in the western states.

Establishing populations in North and South Dakota as well as Nebraska combined with the males’ need to find new territory to prevent interbreeding has now spread the cougar far from these starting points to Illinois, Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma. One male was even discovered as far east as Connecticut after making the 2400-kilometer trek from South Dakota.

Ideally, cougars require forestland for cover and areas with more prey than the waving grasses and crops of the Midwest provide, so Michelle LaRue, the lead author of the paper publicizing the success of recovery efforts, and her team encourage wildlife experts throughout the region to ready campaigns to educate the public about how to safely coexist with the creatures.

Yes, that would be much appreciated.

VW's little Vader doing fine after heart surgery

Who wasn’t touched by Max Page’s Vader performance in Volkwagon’s Super Bowl commercial, but the seven-year-old really had to channel the Force to muster up the courage to undergo heart surgery yesterday to replace a valve and fix a hole. It’s the eighth surgery he’s undergone in his very short life.

Luckily, MSNBC reports that the everything went well, though the six- to eight-week recovery means no baseball this summer.

His mother, Jennifer, wrote a letter about his experience, but Max wanted to throw in a few words to everybody, too:

Mighty Max wants me to include one more thing-one of the lines he uses when he speaks to groups.

"Kids, if you use your FORCE and dream big, you can achieve anything. We may be small-but we're mighty!"

Heroes

"Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary" -Gerard Way

Startup brings strangers around the dinner table

As a kid, making friends only required sharing chocolate pudding and Fruit Roll-Ups on the playground. As an adult, the process becomes a bit trickier. Enter Grubwithus, an LA-based startup bringing strangers together for wining, dining, and conversation.

Users (or Grubbers as the site calls them) visit their city's page and browse meal options, selecting the food and diners they find most appetizing. In a situation where a Grubber might be in the mood for Pad Thai and entrepreneurs but the site only has listings for Mexican and sculptors, Grubwithus also offers an option to create a new event. Participants pay a fixed price in advance for a multi-course meal and then just show up to stuff their bellies and maybe find a new friend.

"There is no format. No agenda, no assigned seating," shares Amy Partridge, director of communications for Grubwithus. "Sit down, find where you’re comfortable. The meal is served family style. It’s a social lubricant. People at the very least can find a conversation by asking someone to pass a dish."
