Yahoo's challenge: Finding a viable growth path via acquisitions

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer recently announced her plan to make acquisitions to revitalize and grow Yahoo. Her announcement generated a lot of reaction, but not so much about her ability to execute M&As — Mayer brings M&A experience gained at Google, and if she sticks with relatively small, educational acquisitions, failure on one deal will not break the company.

Instead, the question is more profound: Does the Yahoo CEO have a long-term, cohesive plan to grow the company or will it turn into a fragmented and chaotic IT holding company?

The pawn shop—once a somewhat shady last resort to hawk jewelry for quick cash—has evolved into a viable alternative for families with bad credit under economic stress.

“Pawn shops are seen as more legitimate now,” says Paige Marta Skiba, associate professor of law at Vanderbilt University Law School.

Pawn shops, Skiba says, are “essentially … the more efficient Craig’s List.”

Unlike natural disasters, such as tornadoes and earthquakes, the zombie apocalypse is quite unnatural and features one pretty unique component: brain-eating zombies. If you want to keep your head — and everything else — when the zombie apocalypse comes, you'll need to prepare. Whether you plan to hunt down the living dead or lay low when it all goes down, now is the time to plan, research, and train.

Lucas plans to donate most of Disney sale proceeds to education

With the announcement of the sale of Lucasfilms Ltd to Disney for more than $4 billion yesterday, speculation flew as to what this deal would mean for the future of the beloved Star Wars franchise, but one possibly big winner in the deal could be education.

According to a spokesperson for the company, “…Lucas plans to ‘donate the majority of the proceeds to his philanthropic endeavors,’” which include Edutopia, part of the George Lucas Educational Foundation. In 2010, he stated that, “I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race,” a sentiment that leads Geek Legacy to believe education would end up receiving much of the proceeds.

While we don’t have concrete confirmation that this will be the case, we certainly hope the success of Star Wars will continue to inspire children to look beyond the farm on Tatooine to bigger and better things.

6 reasons to start a business blog

Running a thriving business takes plenty of time all on its own without worrying about maintaining a blog, but blogging can bring a whole new dimension to your brand that could delight customers and have them asking for more in the least likely places.

As Darren Rowse at ProBlogger points out, no one expected the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be lighthearted enough to do a post on readying for the zombie apocalypse, but they’ve surely logged a few more fans as a result of their efforts and so could you.

Here are six reasons your business may want to jump in the blogging game:

1. Most businesses think it’s too hard, too scary, or too much work

Your competitors are probably saying much the same thing you are about blogging. “It’s too hard. I don’t have time. I don’t even know where to begin!” That means you have a great opportunity to jump in, get started, and engage with your target clients while other businesses in your niche are procrastinating. So do it, and build your competitive advantage before they have time to step in and take up the slack.

2. Audiences are more open to blogs than ever

Blogs are everywhere. The web is so chock-a-block with great content now that many readers no longer differentiate between what they call “blogs,” “news sites,” “websites,” and other content forms. What they want is to be informed and entertained.

If you can manage either of those goals through your business’s blog, you’ll be able to build a readership.

From the Photographer, Randy Scott Slavin:

"New York City is always bright. Street lights, business marquees, light from apartments and car headlights merge to light every corner of the city streets, even on the darkest nights. It is the night after NYC was decimated by Hurricane Sandy, downtown NYC is in the midst of a power outage that has plunged it into complete darkness. I felt the call to hit the eerily dark streets and show New York as it is rarely seen. Trekking around with my tripod I was able to get the long exposures necessary to see in the dark."
