8 tips from successful people

When Inc.’s Jeff Haden plumbed the habits of his highly successful friends, he found a few habits that may surprise you and a few that may not, but either way gives us an inside look at work lives well spent.

1. They don't create back-up plans.

Back-up plans can help you sleep easier at night. Back-up plans can also create an easy out when times get tough.

You'll work a lot harder and a lot longer if your primary plan simply has to work because there is no other option. Total commitment--without a safety net--will spur you to work harder than you ever imagined possible.

If somehow the worst does happen (and the "worst" is never as bad as you think) trust that you will find a way to rebound. As long as you keep working hard and keep learning from your mistakes, you always will.

2. They do the work...

You can be good with a little effort. You can be really good with a little more effort.

But you can't be great--at anything--unless you put in an incredible amount of focused effort.

Scratch the surface of any person with rare skills and you'll find a person who has put thousands of hours of effort into developing those skills.

There are no shortcuts. There are no overnight successes. Everyone has heard about the 10,000 hours principle but no one follows it... except remarkably successful people.

So start doing the work now. Time is wasting.

Having trouble mastering patience?

Patience is a matter of control. I certainly do not possess it, but I do admire those who do. And as someone who likes to be in control, as do most executives with whom I work, control may open the window to developing greater levels of patience.

New York Dals

It is not that I’ve never cooked dal, the family of Indian legume dishes that is a staple for the hundreds of millions of vegetarians of India, as well as who knows how many millions of omnivores; it’s just that I’ve never cooked it especially well. I realized this when I first visited northern India about 10 years ago and — even in a Sikh langar, a canteen where food is free for all — ate dal that was infinitely tastier than my own.

Part of that, probably, was the thrill of eating food where it belongs, and part of it was that many dals contain unconscionable amounts of ghee, a form of clarified butter. (Western Europe is not the only part of the world where cooks have recognized that butter makes many things taste much better.)

But part of it was some lack of feel for making dal, a kind of ignorance that I couldn’t overcome simply by experimenting or following cookbooks. As legumes have become a more important part of my cooking, I decided that my dal problem needed to be remedied. I turned to Julie Sahni.

Does telecommuting mean more work?

Instead of being a way to balance career and family, US employees who telecommute often find themselves working more hours each week, say researchers at the University of Texas at Austin.

  • Most of the respondents who work from home add five to seven hours to their workweek compared with those who work exclusively at the office.
  • Those who work remotely also are significantly less likely to work a standard 40-hour schedule and more likely to work overtime.
  • Most telecommuting hours occur after an employee has already put in 40 hours of work at the office.

We all know that nothing says “love” during the holiday season like homemade gifts, but since no one’s in the market for a clay ashtray these days, it’s time for a new kind of smoky treat and an edible one at that.

Though Instructables user Canida didn’t turn heads at the 2012 SF Bacon Takedown with her awe-inspiring, mouthwatering creation (did we mention it’s made with liquor?), it’s sure to be a hit wherever you go this holiday season. Forget cookies at this year's exchange and make room for bacon.
