Urban bus stop art makes time fly

Waiting for the bus at this stop in Milan got a whole lot more fun once clever conceptual artist Fra. Biancoshock provided them with the ultimate form of entertainment, which popped their stress away like the wrapping they used to pass the time.

The principle here is sort of like "time flies when you're having fun," but simpler. The basic notion, says MIT researcher Richard Larson, is that time goes by if you are doing something — anything — that occupies you; even if that something is stabbing your finger onto plastic bubbles. "Occupied time" just feels shorter than "unoccupied time." People doing nothing in a line typically overestimate their wait by about 36 percent. Presumably, these Milanese bus passengers will now wait much more happily.

We know we would.

Has your inner hipster been begging to be let loose, but unsure where to start?

Croatian graphic designer Mihael Mikloši is here to help with the Hipster Starter Pack, which comes complete with worn flannel, mix tape, Polaroid camera and even a wide variety of ironic mustaches.

The first step is always the hardest, but if the second is still a challenge, there’s an owner’s manual as well.

Happy hipster-ing!

In our personal lives, we talk about things like security and privacy all the time. Last week’s uproar on Facebook is only the latest example.

But most large enterprises seem to be missing the boat … by a nautical mile.

According to the Altimeter Group, “almost two-thirds of companies … say that social media is a significant or critical risk to their brand reputation.”

Florida looking for a few good python hunters

Are you a hunter looking for an extra special challenge this year, something you can really get wrapped up in, so to speak?

Then it’s time to head to Florida, and we’re not talking about putting a target on particularly large mice that may be wandering the state, but Burmese pythons, an invasive species threatening the Everglades ecosystem that can reach up to 17+ feet long.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is offering $1500 to the person who kills the most snakes and $1000 for the largest in the four wildlife management areas specified (and roadkill doesn’t count). Entrants of the 2013 Python Challenge must be over 18 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian and the animals must be humanely killed in the field.

Though hunting an animal that can cause serious damage with a bite or squeeze may seem like a rather risky endeavor that would require years of training, to receive a permit, the only requirement is completing a thirty-minute online course and paying the $25 entrance fee.

The competition begins on January 12 and runs to February 10, offering a full month of fun as only Florida can provide.
