Lessons for success from a Tetris Master

Did we mention that he's 18 years old? Age doesn't matter when you've acheived a title that only eight people in the world (and only two outside of Japan) have ever acheived: World Grand Master in Tetris. I know what you're thinking: what lessons can I learn from this Geek? Geekwire finds out. Here's one:

It’s not over ’til it’s over

It’s tough enough to follow how Birrell manages to teleport the game pieces from the top of the Tetris screen to—19 times out of 20—its ideal home on the stack. But the few times mistakes cost him big and I saw that stack rise way, way too high in a round of Tetris: The Grand Master 2 Plus at Full Tilt (see the video above), I couldn’t figure out how he could stay so calm.

“No matter how bad your situation gets, you have to make it something you can handle,” Birrell said after an error cost him a few rows. Over the arcade buttons, his fingers kept fluttering.

“If you want to have a good game, you’ve got to keep going.”

Seconds later, he was back to playing at the bottom of the screen, like it never happened.

How to use a Hackathon to find employees

Hackathons––whether true Hackathons or just startup events––are great ways to find employees. Unless, of course, you don't know what you're doing. Don't go in unprepared. Entrepreneur offers some great tips to make sure you use these Hackathons to the max. Here's one tip:

Don’t be a digital wallflower.
Once you’re at the event, use the time to get a feel for which people you'll be most comfortable with. Only speak at length with developers willing to explain what they do in detail. Remember, they are coding right there before your eyes. If they can’t explain how they are engineering a problem -- literally command by command -- then they are probably not worth the time.

Once you think you’ve found a match, be ready to explain your idea. That’s the moment to pitch your “next big thing.” In doing so, present yourself as who you are -- the well-prepared entrepreneur. Don’t overstate your computer acumen.

The History of HTML5 takes us through the story of how HTML5 became one of the most standard languages used on the Internet. It has come a long way from its more simplistic origins and now HTML 5 has taken the web by storm as a more efficient, modern way to develop webpages. Take a tour with Wix, home of the HTML5 WYSIWYG and see the journey that HTML5 has taken thus far.

It might not be the Taj Mahal but the sentiment is the same for Winston Howes, the English farmer who created this beautiful memorial for his wife.

When his wife Janet died fifteen years ago, Howes carefully planted 6,000 oak trees in the shape of a heart, the end of which points to her childhood home, and that labor of love has now grown into her own sacred grove of sorts in South Gloucestershire, England.

And the winner of the neighborhood badass award is Shawn Freeney (who probably already had the category covered, being an FBI-trained forensic scientist and all)!

Freeney is part of the posse at website Invisible Underground that features sculptures made out of fruit and vegetables, so feel free to mosey over for some Pinterest-worthy inspiration for that next BBQ.

The dragon consists of fourteen watermelons and two pineapples, the innards of which likely provided one monster fruit salad for those who dropped by to admire his creation.

Government regulations and nature do not always agree, though the intention of Michigan’s Department of Environmental Quality was no doubt trying to err on the side of right; however, they didn’t quite understand who they were dealing with when they confronted resident Stephen Tvedten about the illegal dams being constructed on his property.

When Tvedten was informed he must remove the “inherently hazardous” dams, he eagerly gave voice to the builders’ concerns and consternation in a most amusing, but ultimately effective, way.

Here’s a sample courtesy of Letters of Note:

… I am the legal owner and a couple of beavers are in the (State unauthorized) process of constructing and maintaining two wood "debris" dams across the outlet stream of my Spring Pond. While I did not pay for, nor authorize their dam project, I think they would be highly offended you call their skillful use of natural building materials "debris". I would like to challenge you to attempt to emulate their dam project any dam time and/or any dam place you choose. I believe I can safely state there is no dam way you could ever match their dam skills, their dam resourcefulness, their dam ingenuity, their dam persistence, their dam determination and/or their dam work ethic.

As to your dam request the beavers first must fill out a dam permit prior to the start of this type of dam activity, my first dam question to you is: are you trying to discriminate against my Spring Pond Beavers or do you require all dam beavers throughout this State to conform to said dam request? If you are not discriminating against these particular beavers, please send me completed copies of all those other applicable beaver dam permits. Perhaps we will see if there really is a dam violation of Part 301, Inland Lakes and Streams, of the Natural Resource and Environmental Protection Act, Act 451 of the Public Acts of 1994, being sections 324.30101 to 324.30113 of the Michigan Compiled Laws annotated…
