Defying gravity with the Pin Up mask?

The fight against gravity isn’t always a pretty one, and that’s especially true in the case of the Pin Up! Face Supporter Mask.

For only $110 USD, those determined to fight the hourglass can get this odd collection of headstraps that promise to heat the areas most likely to feel the drag, therein preventing sagging.

We hate to say it, but if heat was the key, there wouldn’t be a plastic surgeon’s office in every other strip mall in Phoenix (and if you’ve never been to Phoenix, let us assure you, there are A LOT of strip malls). What it does look like is the perfect way to bring on a nasty case of adult acne, but hey, that’s better than sagging, right?

The picnic table that brings the outdoors to you

Back in college, there was an inventive chap who planted grass in his dorm room bedframe so he could capture the feeling of sleeping in the great outdoors every night. If you’re attached to your mattress and don’t feel like sleeping on dirt but long for an outdoor oasis inside, the picNYC table by Haiko Cornelissen might be more up your alley.

picNYC is essentially an aluminum table frame with space inside that can we used as a planter bed. Cut and welded in the United States, the aluminum used is lightweight so it’s perfect for transient New Yorkers that are always moving from one apartment to another. At $5,950 a pop, the table isn’t cheap, but customers that live in NY get a special bonus with their order – a free grass installation with delivery.

Yuka Yoneda of Inhabit suggested herbs might be a particularly clever idea and there are also a wonderful variety of small groundcover plants that would add a bit of color depending on the time of year. Making the kids trim the table everyday would also be a great way of keeping them occupied during the long summer vacation.

Spread the love and share your parking spot

The stress of finding a parking spot can ruin a great night out, especially in cities where public transportation is hard to come by. Since not all of us have a sixth sense as to who is leaving the lot next (versus those who decide to write a carry on a fifteen minute conversation before leaving their spot…with the car running), Neha Sampat and Matthew Baier decided to create an app called KurbKarma.

Users who are leaving desirable parking spots publish these spots to the community. If someone uses the app to take their spot when they leave, the publisher is rewarded with “KarmaKredits” which can be used in turn for a parking spot when they need it. By connecting people who are leaving desirable parking spots with people who need them, KurbKarma aims to improve the day by eliminating the nightmare of parking in the city.

With enough buy-in, this could be the saving grace of Saturday nights everywhere.

It's been found that full-time employees spend 33 percent of their waking hours at their workplace — that's a third of your life spent at the office! It's no wonder, then, that your working environment can have such a big impact on your happiness and productivity.

Many startups have realized this and created gorgeous, open offices for their employees. However, some companies are still stuck in the bland "cubicleville" mentality. If you're working in one of these productivity-sucking environments, we have got some suggestions to help you turn it around.

Supercomputer simulations reveal the physics of ion bombardment of metal surfaces, and could lead to better ways to make nanoscale products.

“Surface patterns and stresses caused by ion beam bombardments have been extensively studied experimentally but could not be predicted accurately so far,” says Kyung-Suk Kim, professor of engineering at Brown University.

A single brief therapy session for adults with a lifelong debilitating spider phobia resulted in lasting changes to the brain’s response to fear, report researchers from Northwestern University.

Before the session, the participants were even afraid to look at photos of spiders. When they did, the regions of the brain associated with fear response—the amygdala, insula, and cingulate cortex—lit up with activity in an fMRI scan.

Reagan's blood and 7 other gross celebrity items sold at auction

A vial of what's purported to be Ronald Reagan's dried blood residue: Fans of the former president are already willing to pay upwards of $14,000 for this bizarre item.

There used to be a thriving trade in the (sometimes dubious) relics of Christian saints — St. Anthony's voice box, a vial of St. Gennaro's blood, splinters from the cross used in Jesus' crucifixion — and by those standards, a British auction for a tube of Ronald Reagan's dried blood makes perfect sense, especially if you revere the former president. Of course, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation doesn't see it that way. If the blood sample, purportedly from Reagan's hospital stay when he was recovering from being shot in 1981, is real, auctioning it off is "a craven act and we will use every legal means to stop its sale or purchase," says the foundation. Many Reagan fans disagree — the top bid is already north of $14,000. Still, Reagan's blood isn't even the strangest celebrity relic to hit the auction block recently. Here, a look at seven other items of questionable taste:

Elizabeth Regina

On June 2nd 2012, it will be 60 years since the coronation of Her Majesty, Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of Her other Realms and Territories, Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith (that's the abridged version of her titles by the way).

She's also now the second longest serving monarch in British history behind Queen Victoria who managed 63 years on the throne. You wont bet against QEII beating that record.

These days, you wont find many people who terribly dislike the Queen...the monarchy is all cuddly and even makes people smile. But it wasnt always that way. There was a time, not too long ago, where the monarchy represented an albatross on the neck of the British people and an all too painful representation of privilege in the eyes of the people. The purpose of the monarchy used to be to extract wealth from the ordinary people for itself. Everyone's heard the story of how the 'window tax' was introduced by King William III in 1696 where houses were taxed based on the number of windows they had. Of course, this meant that people began to cover some of their windows with bricks to avoid the tax which then spawned the phrase 'daylight robbery'.

Today, the Crown is subjected to budget cuts and the same level of audit and examination as government ministries. If Her Majesty was peeved at this, I havent heard her complain about it. And the better for her.

And this is the 'secret' to the longevity of the Crown. The sixty years of her reign have witnessed profound social, cultural and technological changes but somehow the monarchy has managed to remain relevant in a non intrusive manner.

Actually it's not a secret at all - what has happened is that over the years, the monarchy has come to represent what the British people want it to be. The Queen will not be tolerated for long if she starts to have an opinion on the merits of a Keynesian approach to reviving the economy as opposed to a plan of cutting the deficit to make room for the private sector. The British people no longer wanted a family of unelected people to have a say over their lives and they have got just that from an obliging monarchy.

This really is the point - leadership ought to always reflect the will of the people it purports to lead. There is a whole industry out there of people who seek to abolish the monarchy but these movements never make any headway because the British people are essentially happy with the Crown as it is right now. The Prince of Wales is watched like a hawk whenever he tries to impose his will on any public matter and always receives a robust response for his troubles.

To remain relevant, especially for long periods, smart leaders know that it is always in their own interest to give up their own powers and have it dispersed as widely as possible. Any other way invites violence and especially encourages those who have real or imagined grievances to have a go at the symbol of power wherever they find it. Instead we get 2 days holiday to celebrate the Jubilee and those who cant make it into London to watch the events will most likely be watching on TV.

Viewed through these lens, Nigeria is a conundrum of sorts - the government doesnt work and has never refelcted the aspirations of the people. Yet it grows bigger and more powerful by the day, unafraid to legislate over the kind of sex people are allowed to have or the kind of bread it thinks they should eat. It does not care to deliver on old promises before making new ones. It spends the commonwealth like it's going out of fashion and generally throws itself about like a bullying nuisance.

And when it comes to elections, the one time when the people get to have a say, everything is done to ensure that the will of the people is brought in line with a pre-determined outcome.

But none of this is surprising. What baffles is why we continue to put up with it? And more worryingly, how long do we intend to put up with it for. When will government sit when we tell it to and stand when we say so? As opposed to being the surest means of capturing the state's resources for a narrow elite....

I will be pondering these questions as I toast Elizabeth Regina on the occassion of her Diamond Jubilee in a couple of weeks. It's safe to do so now. What the monarchy represents today is something I can happily tolerate and live with as is the case I am sure with millions of British people across the country.

She's done as she's been told.

For most college students, sexting is no big deal. In fact, as many as four out of five engage in sexting. But sexting can lead to more than just embarrassment -- it can lead to legal consequences, especially if a minor is involved. The problem with sexting doesn't end there. It has become an epidemic among college students, which can lead to other problems too.
