A simple technique using Scotch poster tape has induced high-temperature superconductivity in a semiconductor for the first time.

The team used Scotch poster tape and glass slides to place high-temperature superconductors in proximity with a special type of semiconductor known as a topological insulator.

“Who would have thought simply sticking things together can generate entirely new effects?” says team leader and University of Toronto physicist Ken Burch.

Can supermodels make Google glasses cool?

Can Google conquer the runway? The California search giant isn't exactly synonymous with the glitz and glamour of New York Fashion Week, so onlookers were understandably surprised when Google's computerized glasses found their way onto the faces of models during Diane von Furstenberg's show over the weekend. The wearable computers, which run on Android and use a built-in camera to record what the wearer sees, were used to create a documentary called DVF Through Glass, which will be released on the fashion house's Google+ page Thursday. Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who walked arm-in-arm with von Furstenberg after the show, said, "Beauty, style, and comfort are as important to [Project Glass] as the latest technology." Can supermodels help Google take the geek out of geek-chic, or will it take a lot more to make the headsets actually look cool?

Some gut microbes help the body absorb more dietary fat, which means their host takes in more calories from the same amount of food.

“This study is the first to demonstrate that microbes can promote the absorption of dietary fats in the intestine and their subsequent metabolism in the body,” says senior study author John Rawls, associate professor in the department of cell and molecular physiology at University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

“The results underscore the complex relationship between microbes, diet, and host physiology.”

A new computer program can recognize rough sketches—of bunnies, teapots, donuts, and more—as they’re drawn in real time.

The Brown University researchers credit crowdsourcing with their advances. “It was the data gathering that had been holding this back, not the digital representation or the machine learning; those have been around for a decade,” notes computer scientist James Hays.

“There’s just no way to learn to recognize say, sketches of lions, based on just a clever algorithm. The algorithm really needs to see close to 100 instances of how people draw lions, and then it becomes possible to tell lions from potted plants.”

For those who can’t help but hit snooze one time too many, there isn’t time before work to do responsible things like eat breakfast and check the weather, but French designer Nathan Brunstein’s got you covered with the Jamy Toaster (if you remember to grab the umbrella, that is).

This concept toaster prints the day’s forecast right on your breakfast so that if you must eat and run, at least you’ll be prepared for what greets you outside the door.
