Sex sells. And with many magazines struggling to compete with digital demands, some publishers have become more reliant on risqué cover art that might garner buzz and buyers. The latest subversive attempt comes from Conde Nast's Vogue Hommes International, which features model Stephanie Seymour being choked and fondled by a rapturous Marlon Teixeira.

Not scandalous enough? Check out all nine sultry covers.

Lead with an open mind

The division CEO and chief financial officer glared ferociously at each other after a heated exchange. Twelve others sat tensely around the conference room table, silently assessing their limited options: Do the politically expedient thing and side with the CEO, or do what’s mostly right for the business and side with the CFO? This lose-lose outcome has it all — power gone wrong, ego overload and one-track thinking — and plays out all too frequently in businesses of all sizes.

Happy belated birthday to the emoticon (and how it's showing its age)

The :) may be looking more like this :/ these days, now that it’s hit its thirtieth birthday, but the humble symbol that has made our online communication that much more clear should be thrilled it’s still so popular today.

Scott E. Fahlman of Carnegie Mellon University birthed the symbol at 11:44 a.m., September 19, 1982 with the following message:

19-Sep-82 11:44 Scott E Fahlman :-)

From: Scott E Fahlman

I propose that the following character sequence for joke markers:

:-)

Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical to mark things that are NOT jokes, given current trends. For this, use:

:-(

Though many of us routinely use the smiley face or some variant thereof, you may notice the nose; a study out of Stanford University recently revealed that those who use the nose and those who don’t also tend to have a different online vocabulary with the younger, noseless crowd preferring abbreviations like “omg” and Justin Bieber references.

(Note to self: Start using noses.)

This is only one aspect of the biography of our beloved emoticon examined by Jen Doll at The Atlantic, though, so be sure to check out the full article and throw a few extras into your communications. After all, in the immortal words of Annie, “You’re never fully dressed without a smile,” and who wants to be sending out naked e-mails?

Wait, don't answer that.

Facebook Timeline cover photos gave us our first taste of social networking profiles for companies that could visually represent the brand but, more importantly, the personality of a business. Spicing up profiles on most other networks was left to creative descriptions and creative content. Twitter just changed that.

Launched this week, Twitter is starting to look more like Facebook, a move that’s great for brands trying to better showcase themselves on the network. For individual businesses and agencies, this presents several opportunities not to overlook.

Give sperm a 'kick' to make it fertile

Adding a missing protein to infertile human sperm can increase its ability to fertilize an egg, dramatically raising the odds of a successful pregnancy.

“We know that some men are infertile because their sperm fail to activate eggs. Even though their sperm fuses with the egg, nothing happens. These sperm may lack a proper functioning version of PLCz, which is essential to trigger the next stage in becoming pregnant,” says Tony Lai, professor at Cardiff University.

“What’s important from our research is that we have used human sperm PLCz to obtain the positive results that we had previously observed only in experiments with mice."

7 tips to becoming more popular at work

In the immortal words of the Cheers theme, “Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name, and they’re always glad you came,” and whether or not we admit it, being well-liked at the office is a great perk for the daily grind.

Lama Ataya at Bayt Blog has done us a huge favor by letting the shy folks out there bypass the humiliation of asking “Why don’t you like me?” and offering up seven tips to make Monday mornings that much better.

1. Genuinely see the best in those around you

Rather than dwelling on colleagues’ areas of weakness and deficiency; aim to bring out the best in them. A genuine positivity in your outlook and approach will reap tremendous benefits in terms of how others perceive you and will earn you kudos as you try to get buy-in from colleagues and different stakeholders within your organisation.

2. Aim to be interested rather than just interesting

Do you turn every story you hear into a story about you? Are you perhaps known in some circles as a little egocentric or self-centered at times? Try to show more interest in other people and be as genuine as you can. Practice active listening instead of talking and genuinely show empathy and understanding and interest towards those you work with. It’s great if you are in top form and have great stories to tell but be conscious not to intimidate or alienate those who are trying to impress you and gain a little recognition of their own.
