When using your laptop on the go, taking the mouse along isn’t very convenient, especially when the flattest surface available on the bus is your knee, but that’s the whole idea behind the Arc Mouse by Seunghoon Shin and Chang Seok Kim.

This design is perfect for armchair executives, subway CEOs or even a plain old desktop when you’re forced to follow tradition.

As with so many interesting ideas, it’s still just a design, but we’ll wait and see if anyone decides put the idea into production.

Does Starbucks get the most social media mentions because it’s more social-savvy or because it’s Starbucks? How much do Facebook likes, tweets, Pinterest pins and Foursquare check-ins translate into new sales? How much time and money should your restaurant invest in social media efforts and where should those resources come from?

These questions and more are likely to be on tap when FohBoh and Networld Media Group present the Foodservice Social Media Universe conference in Chicago this month, and they’re questions that have been getting more and more media coverage lately.

15 Offbeat Holidays You Can Celebrate in September

September brings back to school season and summer’s end, but there are plenty of unusual things to celebrate this month.

3. September 4th: Eat an Extra Dessert Day
You may have observed this holiday a little early on Labor Day, but go ahead and indulge those residual gluttonous impulses because this holiday gives you the green light. That leftover pie isn’t going to eat itself, so really, it’s the least you can do.

4. September 9th: National Grandparents Day

Founder Marian McQuade wanted to set aside a special day not only for the lonely elderly, but also to encourage grandchildren to “tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents provide.” President Jimmy Carter was so on board with this initiative, he made the first Sunday after Labor Day an official national holiday to honor grandmas and grandpas across the country. To this day, the President continues to get in on the action – here’s Barack Obama’s official proclamation from last year. If he can make time, then you definitely have no excuse!

5. September 9th: Wiener Schnitzel Day
Like many of the overlapping entries on our list, the two September 9th holidays don’t need to be mutually exclusive. Why not have a delicious dinner of thinly sliced, deep-fried veal with your Gam-Gam?

6. September 10th: TV Dinner Day
The TV Dinner was first introduced to consumers in the United States by C.A. Swanson & Sons in the early 1950s. This pre-packaged, frozen meal would not only provide you a whole dinner with the slight flick of an oven — it was also designed for ease of consumption while parked in front of a television screen. Take a stroll down your local supermarket’s frozen food aisle to truly appreciate all the TV Dinner has done for our food options.

7. September 15th: National Felt Hat Day
You may think Robin Hood, you may think 10-gallon cowboy, or you may think fedora — but whatever you think, today you have carte blanche to sport your felt-hat-of-choice with pride. Disclaimer: you may still have to remind people the holiday technically prevents them from mocking your accessory.

5 tips for teaching your kids to argue

The thought of arguing with one’s kids is about as appealing as eating a bowl of cold lima beans, but if you’d rather not spend a lifetime enduring arguments that make you want to pull your hair out and maybe even give them a leg up in life, Jay Heinrichs at Figures of Speech Served Fresh has some great advice on how to teach them well.

After all, if you know the arguments are going to come, why not make the best of it?

Aristotle’s Guide to Dinner Table Discourse

1. Argue to teach decision-making. When you argue the various sides of an issue with your kids (“Beach or mountains this summer?”), they are learning to present different options (“Both!”) and then decide which choice to follow.

2. Focus on the future. Arguments about the past (“Who made the mess with the toys?”) or the present (“Good children don’t leave messes.”) are far less productive than focusing on what to do or believe: “What’s a good way to make sure that toys get cleaned up?”

3. Call “fouls.” Anything that impedes debate counts as a foul: Shouting, storming out of the room, or recalling past family atrocities should instantly make you choose the opposite side.
