9 characteristics of a great blog post

With all the choices out there in the blogosphere, to have your ideas read means expressing yourself in a way that tempts an audience to your site and keeps reeling them back in for more.

To get down the basics, Shareaholic’s Ginny Soskey shared these nine elements with ProBlogger to point you in the right direction.

1. Headline

It’s essential to start your post off with a great headline.

In Shareaholic’s publisher network, the most shared websites tend to optimize for keywords in their headlines, include headlines less than ten words, and stick to “list” and “how to” kinds of posts. Think of your headline as a tweet—would you click through to the link if it showed up on your feed? Crafting a headline in the form of a tweet also ensures that your headline is short enough to be shared via Twitter.

2. Sub-header

People like to scan, and large blocks of text scare them off. Try to break up your copy with several sub-headers as it will make it easy for readers to digest your content. Having sub-headers will also help them to comprehend your post as the main points are brought immediately to their attention. Numbers, bolded text or larger font size are all ways you can create sub-headings for your blog. If you have several authors for your blog, be sure to tell them how you want your sub-headers to be styled in your editorial guidelines.

Strolling through the city streets is the best way to see many metropolitan areas, but what is it about walk signals that fool us into thinking hitting the button a hundred times is going to make the light change any faster?

It appears some bright minds in Germany have found a way to put all that useless button pushing to good use bonding with people waiting to cross on the other side with a game of stoplight pong sure to make time fly.

Now this is some infrastructure investment we could all immediately appreciate.

The psychological side effects of teens who quit smoking are similar to those of adults who have been smoking much longer, a study finds.

“Adolescents are showing—even relatively early in the dependence process—significant, strong, negative effects just after acute abstinence from smoking,” says L. Cinnamon Bidwell, a research assistant professor in psychiatry and human behavior at Brown University.

Sea sponge 'engineers' its toxin

Scientists have figured out how the coral reef sea sponge makes its extreme poison—it outsources toxin production to a bacterium living with it symbiotically.

“Cell kill activity is the starting point for many anti-cancer and antibiotic strategies. Having direct control over the structure of these molecules may allow modulation of activity through ‘designed biosynthesis’ potentially leading to future therapies centered on the more effective targeting of cancerous cells or microorganisms," says Neil Oldham of the University of Nottingham’s School of Chemistry.

Roughly one in four couples who divorce in hopes of finding greater happiness may have been better off staying married.

Oleksandr (Alex) Zhylyevskyy, assistant professor of economics at Iowa State University, calls these situations “inefficient divorces.”

“What the paper actually does is look at the impact of spousal cooperation, conflict, and divorce in marriage on the happiness of the spouses,” he says.

You could pay big money to get aerial shots of San Francisco at sunset or have the good fortune of having a seagull do it for free.

Lucky for Nathalie Rollandin, the bird set the camera down nice and easy.

Google hopes into the Bacon game

For all things on the Earth and in the sky, when it comes to searching, we rely on Google to a ridiculous degree (sorry Bing!), but now the spoilsport cheater pants who can’t just play the Kevin Bacon game without taking shortcuts has one very easy way to annoy us further: The Bacon search.

By typing “Bacon number” and an actor’s name, Google will now tell you how many degrees separate that actor from the legendary Kevin Bacon and how they’re connected.

While a number of commenters noted most searches resulted in only two degrees of separation, we did get a three for Mae West.

Color us happy.

Trying to find the hottest costume for the Halloween party this year, something that has “Sizzle” written all over it?

Well, skip the bunny ears and give the French maid the night off, because this year, it’s all about bacon, baby.

For you, your offspring, your pet, there’s always a body willing to bear the proud mark of bacon.

Feel free to slather yourself silly to get the full effect.
