Baptismstories

by Carmen

I grew up in a Christian church. I was a Pastor’s kid. I was baptized when I was six years old but did not really know what I was doing. It was not until the beginning of the year that I loved God and knew him. I was religious in my ways until almost a year ago. I rebelled from my parents and got into drugs, sex, and partying.

I started coming to Mars Hill when a friend invited me. I started reading the Bible again and got into a community group. I learned to love God and asked for his forgiveness and asked him to be part of my life. I used to have doubts of going to hell, and now I know that I will not, that I am God's child alone, and all my identity is in him. Now I want to be baptized, knowing what it is to actually be a Christian and love the Lord.

Carmen will be baptized this Easter Sunday at the 5pm service. To learn more about baptism and why we do it, go here. If you’d like to sign up to be baptized, click here.

Rick Perry — remember him? — was more inspired as a defender of the beef processing industry than he was as a debater. Last week, Perry — along with Iowa’s governor-for-life Terry Branstad and Gov. Sam Brownback of Kansas — implored the media to end its “smear campaign” against pink slime, the ammonia-treated burger extender he’d rather have us call by the name used by its producers: Lean Finely Textured Beef.

Whether “pink slime” is a fair handle or not, public outrage has thrown it off a cliff. Some of the country’s largest grocery chains have announced that they will no longer sell products containing it, as did McDonald’s, while Wendy’s emphatically insisted that it never has. The United States Department of Agriculture, a major buyer of pink slime for its National School Lunch Program, has offered participating schools the option to order their beef with or without it, though it will likely remain in many schools.

As a result, the largest producer of the stuff, Beef Products Inc., has suspended operations at three of its four plants for 60 days, by which time it hopes to do some public relations hocus-pocus to restore consumer confidence before resorting to permanent closures. We’ll see.

There’s something extremely appealing about getting a glimpse of today’s superstars when they were closer to ground level as this montage of old movie clips from Flavorwire does, inspired by the film Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel.

Corman’s B-movies featured a myriad of Hollywood greats back in the seventies, but this piece, edited by Jason Bailey, throws the net a little wider with the debuts of Johnny Depp, Zach Braff, Richard Pryor and Jamie Lee Curtis, to name a few.

With a new statistical model to interpret data and the ability to collect information from smart phones and other mobile devices, Penn State researchers looked at how baseline nicotine dependence and negative emotional states influenced people’s urge to smoke while they were trying to quit.

“One thing that really stood out among the relapsers is how their urge to smoke just never dropped, in contrast to those who were successful in quitting for a month—their urge dropped quickly and systematically—almost immediately upon quitting,” says researcher Stephanie Lanza.

Pinspire
So I decided to give in and see what Pinterest was all about and I ran into resistance right off the bat. I was required to enter my email and wait for an invite. Quickly after that I went searching for a way to bypass the waiting period and I came across Pinspire.com. It was almost an exact clone of Pinterest but without the annoying waiting period. I was literally signed up in seconds.

It’s a lot harder to hop on the escalator when you’re faced with a decal like this reminding you to take the stairs. What a neat idea! Making small changes like this can have a big impact on your health.
