Sure, that striped golf umbrella you picked up at last year’s conference is nice and all, but sometimes you need a little something to man-up the morning commute, and what better way to say “I am more than a drone” than sporting an umbrella with a classically brutal twist? Enter Umbreallas for the Civil but Discontent Man designed by Materious.

Umbrellas for the Civil but Discontent Man combines a symbol of gentlemanly refinement—the full-sized, dark umbrella—with an element of more manly sword-bearing times. The umbrellas offer brief psychological respite from the dictates of social amiability; aggressive fantasies are allowed and encouraged on the daily commute to the office. The effete civilian’s grasp of the handle takes him into the world of the masterful samurai, the medieval barbarian, or the triumphant cavalryman.

Seeing that these were designed by folks in Chicago, they must be primarily for looks since that umbrella isn’t going to last five minutes in a Windy City gale.

You know, even condensed to a minute and redone in LEGOs, Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey is still one big enigma. So much for toys making it easier to understand.

UV photography shows ugly picture of sun damage

We’ve all heard to be on high alert for strange-looking moles, but do markers such as freckles, light eyes and pale skin really make people more susceptible to skin damage?

Using extremely expensive ultraviolet photography, scientists at the University of Colorado found that, indeed, tweens with these characteristic did have more skin damage than those of darker complexions, but that’s no reason not to be on the alert.

[Study co-author Robert]Dellavalle says UV photos have revealed skin damage in children as young as 2. "Even I, as a dermatologist doing sun protection for years, am affected by these images," he says. "I know I can do a better job."

It is hoped that photos such as these will discourage children from skipping the sunscreen and hat in favor of tanning beds and a not-so-healthy glow, after all.
