When solar radiation storms start a brewin’, why not send a chicken into the stratosphere to make good use of the heat?

Actually, no will be chowing down on chicken a la coronal mass ejection any time soon, but Camilla, mascot of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory did bring back a feast of data about radiation storms. Bishop Union High School’s Earth to Sky progam used the rubber chicken as part of an astrobiology project. Camilla went into “…one of the strongest proton storms in years” with a packed lunch of insects and sunflower seeds, and the students plan to study the effects of such high doses of radiation.

Not surprisingly, Camilla has a significant following on Twitter and Facebook.
