Gesture-sign mismatches made while explaining a math problem suggest a deaf child is experiencing a teachable moment, a finding that could help their instructors become better teachers. The deaf students who expressed ideas in gesture that were different from the ideas they expressed in sign were ready to learn to solve the math problems, says Susan Goldin-Meadow, professor of psychology at the University of Chicago.
