If you own a small business, one or two bad reviews can spoil precious leads. Merrily Rocco, owner of Lake Tahoe wedding design firm, Merrily Wed, learned that lesson the hard way when several negative Yelp reviews hurt her business. Open Forum shows how she mitigated the damage from the negative reviews. Here's one step she took: Contact the review site As soon as she discovered the bad reviews, Rocco reached out to Yelp to ask for help. In keeping with its official standard practices, the company did not remove the two client reviews. However, they did eventually take down a third review submitted by a competitor after Rocco submitted proof of the party’s identity. (Yelp generally prohibits business owners from writing negative reviews of their competitors' businesses.) As Rocco discovered, successfully convincing a review site to remove a negative comment is a challenge. Deanna Yick, spokesperson for Google Places, another one of the most popular review sites, explains that, “Reviews are a forum for users to share both positive and negative opinions. We do not arbitrate disputes and more often than not, we leave the review up.” If you have no luck in getting a negative post removed from a review site, there are other steps you can take. After doing their research on those who succeeded before they launched their effort, they found six key ingredients to a great Kickstarter campaign they would like to share in order to get your project’s fundraising off on the right foot. Start with the story. In the book Made To Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die, authors Chip and Dan Heath write, “a credible idea makes people believe, an emotional idea makes people care.” But how can you make your idea emotional?… … We had our Eureka! moment when my cofounder, Brad Geswein, recounted a story from last summer. "[My friend] Dave had his bike light stolen. Riding home that night, he got hit by a car.” We knew the idea was sticky when we overheard friends retelling it verbatim. Plan a friend-fueled viral launch. When I asked Kickstarter rockstar Justin Jensen, inventor of Cineskates, for advice, he said, “If you look at top Kickstarter projects, they launched with guns blazing.” Many hit their funding goal within a day. Great Kickstarters like Justin create a movement. And all movements start with a core group. In our case, it was our wonderfully supportive friends. But we added a (not-so) secret weapon: We created a super-simple “Launching Soon” page with Launchrock. Our friends took it and spread it like crazy. We had hundreds of signups within weeks. Though most of us would be hardpressed to find these newbies on the local grocery store’s shelves, with summer comes that sense of freedom and adventure necessary to push us beyond the boundaries of places one can earn discounts on gas. Sarah Novak at Care2 presents eight new superfoods you probably haven’t tried, and also throws in links to how to prepare them. Happy eating! 1. Spirulina Spirulina is a blue green algae that’s a wonderful food especially for those that avoid meat products. Though this is certainly true of everyone, a deficiency in B12 is more common in vegans and some vegetarians because B12 is found in animal products. If you’re feeling really tired and rundown, you might not be getting enough. There is no whole food source of B12 for vegans, except for spirulina. What’s more, spirulina has iron. A deficiency of iron, also called anemia, is a very common ailment in our population. Add spirulina to shakes and smoothies by the spoonful... 2. Hemp Seeds Hemp seeds are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 is made up of three acids EPA, DHA, and ALA. ALA can be found in hemp seeds, flax seeds, and chia seeds. Hemp seeds also have more protein than milk or eggs and they’re easier to digest than both of them… 3. Adzuki Beans They’re smaller than black beans and reddish brown in color but loaded with nutrients. In fact, these little guys contain some of the highest levels of protein and lowest levels of fat of any variety of beans. They also contain high levels of potassium, fiber, B vitamins, iron, zinc, and manganese. Adzuki beans promote regular bowel movements, are a good source of energy, and help lower cholesterol...
